“You like coffee.” — Is that a question? Or a statement? Without the right melody, nobody knows. ☕🤔

Two people at a cafe, one speaking and the other looking unsure whether it was a question or statement

At a coffee shop, my friend said to the barista:

“You like coffee.”

The barista just stared. Was that a question? A statement? An accusation? 😅

What my friend meant was: “You like coffee? — a friendly question. But because her voice stayed flat, it sounded like she was just telling the barista a fact about herself.

💡 한국어는 “~요?”만 붙이면 질문이 돼요. 영어는 목소리를 올려야 질문이 됩니다!

In Korean, you can make a question just by adding “~요?” at the end. The melody of your voice doesn’t have to change much. But in English, your voice itself goes up or down — and that’s what tells the listener whether you’re asking or telling.

Voice goes UP ⬆️ at the end = question

Voice goes DOWN ⬇️ at the end = statement

This is called intonation — the melody of your voice. Think of it like music. Every sentence has a tune.

⬇️ Falling intonation = statement (I’m telling you)

“I like coffee.” ⬇️ — You’re sharing a fact.

“It’s Monday.” ⬇️ — You’re stating something.

“She lives in Seoul.” ⬇️ — Just information.

⬆️ Rising intonation = yes/no question (I’m asking you)

“You like coffee?” ⬆️ — You want a yes or no.

“It’s Monday?” ⬆️ — You’re not sure and you’re checking.

“She lives in Seoul?” ⬆️ — Really? I didn’t know!

💡 같은 단어, 같은 순서인데 끝을 올리면 질문, 내리면 진술. 이게 영어 억양의 기본이에요!

Try it right now. Say “You like coffee” with your voice going down at the end. That’s a statement. Now say it again with your voice going up at “coffee.” That’s a question!

Here’s a bonus: WH-questions (what, where, when, who, why, how) go DOWN ⬇️, not up!

⬇️ WH-questions go DOWN:

“What’s your name?” ⬇️

“Where do you live?” ⬇️

“How are you?” ⬇️

Why? Because you already know you’re asking — the question word does the job.

✅ Quick Quiz

“It’s raining.” — Up or down?

Down ⬇️ — it’s a statement!

“It’s raining?” — Up or down?

Up ⬆️ — you’re surprised and checking!

Try saying “You’re ready” two ways:

Voice down ⬇️ = “You’re ready.” (confident, let’s go!)

Voice up ⬆️ = “You’re ready?” (are you sure?)

Same words. Different melody. Different meaning. 🎯

단, What/Where/When 같은 의문사 질문은 끝이 내려가요. 의문사 자체가 이미 “질문”이라는 신호를 주기 때문이에요.
