You forgot your friend’s birthday. 😱

Now you need to make up for it.

Make up? Like, with lipstick? 💄🤔

No cosmetics involved! 😄

“Make up for” = to compensate, to do something good to balance out something bad.

You messed up? You do something extra to fix the damage. That’s making up for it.

💡 “make up for” = 만회하다 / 보상하다.

Be careful — “make up” by itself means something completely different!

“make up” (no “for”) = 화해하다 or 꾸며내다

“make up FOR” = 만회하다

That little “for” changes everything.

“make up” = 화해하다 (“We made up after the fight”). “make up for” = 만회하다 (“I’ll make up for being late”). “for” 하나가 뜻을 완전히 바꿔요!

“Make up for”

💬 After forgetting something

A: You forgot our anniversary!

B: I know, I’m so sorry. Let me make up for it — dinner anywhere you want tonight. 🍽️

💬 Compensating for a weakness

A: She’s not the fastest runner, but she makes up for it with incredible stamina.

☝️ “Make up for” isn’t always about mistakes. It can mean a strength compensating for a weakness — a quality that balances things out.

🔄 “Make up” family — don’t mix them up!

“Make up for” → 만회하다 / 보상하다

“I’ll make up for being late.”

“Make up” (with someone) →

“We fought, but we made up.”

“Make up” (a story) →

“He made that up. It never happened.”

“Make up” (your mind) →

“Make up your mind!”

✅ Which “make up”?

You missed your friend’s party. Now you want to treat them to lunch to compensate.

What do you say?

→ (A) “Let me make up with you.”

→ (B) “Let me make up for missing your party.”

(B)! (A) means “let’s reconcile after a fight” — which is not what happened here. 😅

Everyone messes up sometimes.

The difference is what you do next:

“Let me make up for it.”

Six words that can save almost any relationship. 💛
