That trip to Europe you keep dreaming about… ✈️

It’s not going to pay for itself.

Time to save up! 💰

“Save up” = to save money little by little, over time, for a specific goal.

The difference is subtle but real:

Save = 아끼다, 저축하다 (일반적) — “I’m trying to save money.”

Save up = 목표를 향해 모으다 — “I’m saving up for a trip to Europe.”

The magic pattern: save up + for + 목표

→ “She’s saving up for a new laptop.”

→ “It took me two years to save up for this.”

🪙⬆️ pile up(쌓이다), fill up(가득 채우다)처럼 “up”은 점점 쌓여가는 그림이에요.

“Save up”

💬 Sharing a goal

A: Another convenience store lunch? You love that pasta place!

B: I’m saving up for a trip to Jeju next month. Every bit counts! ✈️

💬 Talking about a big purchase

A: Nice camera! When did you get it?

B: Last week! I saved up for six months. Totally worth it. 📷

☝️ “I saved up for it” adds a little story to your purchase — it wasn’t random spending, it was a goal you reached. People love hearing that!

🔄 The money-habits family

“Save up (for)” → 목표 위해 모으다 → “Saving up for a car.” 🚗

“Set aside” → 떼어두다 → “I set aside 10% of every paycheck.”

“Cut back on” → 줄이다 → “I’m cutting back on delivery food.”

(반대 표현) → “I splurged on a fancy dinner.”

☝️ The full money story: you cut back on small things, set aside a bit each month, save up for the goal… and sometimes, you splurge. Balance! 😄

✅ Save or Save Up?

Which sentence needs “up”?

→ (A) “You should ___ electricity by turning off the lights.”

→ (B) “I’m ___ing ___ for concert tickets.”

→ (A) = save (아끼다 — no goal, just conserving). (B) = saving up (콘서트 티켓이라는 목표를 향해 모으는 중!). Goal = up! 🎯

Small amounts, saved with a purpose, become big dreams.

So — what are YOU saving up for? ✈️📷🎸

Say it out loud in English. It makes the goal feel real!
