Lesson 5:

How I'm Really Feeling

Express emotions with nuance

1. Warm-up 2 min

"How are you?" — "I'm fine." Sound familiar? We all do this, but it's such a missed opportunity. Emotions are complex. You might feel relieved but also nervous about a new job. Today, let's go beyond "happy" and "sad" and learn to express our feelings like adults.

How would you describe your current mood — not just "good" or "bad," but more specifically?

You'll learn:
Describe complex emotions with precise vocabulary
Explain the reasons behind your feelings naturally
Respond to others' emotions with genuine empathy
2. Expressions 7 min
Review
...the kind of person who would...
Use to show someone's true nature. "He's the kind of person who would stay late to help."
Describing emotional support

"My mom is the kind of person who would stay up all night if she knew I was worried."

I can only imagine how [adj] that must be
Use when someone shares hard news. Better than "That sounds hard" — shows deeper empathy.
Responding to a stressed friend

"I can only imagine how exhausting that must be. You've been dealing with so much."

New
I've been feeling a mix of...
Use when you have mixed feelings. "I've been feeling a mix of excited and nervous."
Starting a new job

"I've been feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety about starting the new role."

That must be / must have been really [adj] for you
Use "must be" for current feelings, "must have been" for past experiences. Shows deep empathy.
→ 현재 감정엔 "must be", 과거 경험엔 "must have been"으로 공감해요.
Empathizing with someone

"That must be really hard right now. And it must have been even harder when you were alone."

It makes sense that you feel that way
Use to tell someone their feelings are reasonable. Very comforting to hear.
When someone feels guilty

"It makes sense that you feel that way. Anyone would feel frustrated in that situation."

3. Example Dialogue 4 min
A friend seems stressed about work
Tutor

You seem a bit down today. Is everything okay?

Student

To be honest, I've been feeling a mix of stress and disappointment. I didn't get the promotion I was hoping for.

Tutor

Oh no. That must be really difficult for you. You worked so hard for it.

Student

Yeah. Part of me feels like I should be grateful I still have my job, but I also feel... defeated?

Tutor

It makes sense that you feel that way. I can only imagine how disappointing that must be. It's okay to feel upset.

Student

Thanks. It helps to hear that. My sister is the kind of person who would just tell me to "be positive," but sometimes I just need someone to listen.

✓ Validating emotions ("It makes sense") is often more helpful than giving advice.
