Can You Help Me?
Give and receive advice
We all face problems that need solving—at work, at home, or in our relationships. Sometimes we need advice from others, and sometimes people come to us for help. Being able to ask for and give advice clearly is an important part of good communication.
When you have a problem, who do you usually ask for advice? What makes their advice helpful?
"I think you should talk to your manager directly because avoiding the issue will only make it worse. It's better to address it now."
"You could try waking up 30 minutes earlier. It might help with your morning stress. That's what worked for me."
"If you practice every day, I'm sure it will make a big difference. Consistency is the key to improvement."
"As long as you keep practicing, you will get better. Don't worry about making mistakes – everyone does at first."
"If I were you, I'd take a few days off to rest. You've been working so hard, and everyone needs a break sometimes."
You seem stressed. What's going on?
The problem that I'm having is my neighbor plays loud music at night. What do you think I should do? It's been going on for weeks, and I can't sleep well.
That sounds really frustrating. Have you tried talking to them?
Not yet. I'm worried they might get angry.
I think you should talk to them directly first because they might not realize how loud it is. Most people don't want to be rude on purpose.
What if that doesn't work?
You could try writing a polite note. It might help with avoiding face-to-face confrontation. If I were you, I'd also contact the building management. If you explain the situation calmly, I'm sure it will get resolved soon.
Give advice with reasons and offer alternatives.
Give them strong advice and explain why it will help.
Describe your problem and ask for advice.
Offer a gentle suggestion and give advice from their perspective.
"What's the best advice you've ever received, and how did it change the way you approach problems?"
Think about advice that had a lasting impact on your life or decisions.
Are you comfortable giving advice to others? What do you consider before offering your opinion?
Do you find it easy or difficult to ask for help? Why do you think that is?
Have you ever ignored someone's advice and regretted it later? What happened and what did you learn?
- I think you should [action] because [reason].
- You could try [action]. It might help with [problem].
- If you [action], I'm sure it will [positive result].
- The problem that I'm having is [issue]. What do you think I should do?
- If I were you, I'd [action].
When a friend has a problem, offer both a strong suggestion and an alternative.
Practice asking for advice about something small and notice how people respond.
