Lesson 5:
He Said That...
Report what others said
Every day, we hear things from others and need to pass them on. Whether it's a message from a coworker, news from a friend, or instructions from a boss—knowing how to report speech accurately is essential. Let's learn how to do this naturally!
Did someone tell you something interesting recently? What was it about?
"She said that the meeting has been moved to 3 PM, so I changed my schedule."
"My boss told me that I got a promotion, which was really surprising. I didn't expect it at all."
"From what the manager said, it seems like we need to finish by Friday. That's a tight deadline."
"She mentioned that there would be changes, but didn't explain what they would be. I'm a bit worried now."
"After he said that, I started working on the changes immediately. I wanted to make a good impression."
You were in the meeting this morning, right? What did the manager say?
Yes. She said that we need to finish the report by Thursday, so I'll have to work overtime this week.
Anything else about the project?
She mentioned that there might be budget cuts, but didn't explain why. That made everyone a bit nervous. According to her, they're still reviewing the numbers.
I see. Did she say anything to you personally?
Yes! She told me that I'll lead the presentation, which was really exciting. I didn't expect that at all. After she said that, I started preparing right away.
